What started as a lockdown project soon became a passion-the result, a beautiful range of ladies’ fashion Vellies now known as New Earth.
“It all started when my wife at the time requested a pair of yellow leopard Vellies for her birthday. I contacted a friend in the footwear industry to make a pair, to which he replied, ‘I have no idea as I haven’t seen a pair in all my years of travel’. He delivered leopard print Vellies made up of various materials, although not what I had in mind, the concept was right”, explains owner and founder Daryl Scott.
Daryl posted a photo of the shoes on Facebook and within a week it had 9,000 views worldwide with comments such as; “I have to have a pair” and “How much are they?” When a lady commented, “I’m lusting for a pair!”, that’s when he knew he was onto something! Before he knew it, 40 orders were placed and delivered all over the world and shared on social media by very happy customers.
“It sounds straightforward and simple, however, we were dealing with lockdown, sourcing leather, shipping availability, factories closing for holidays and the closure of my sports business – but amidst it all, New Earth was born”, he explains.
New Earth products are manufactured locally and have since expanded into a wide range of plain and metallic foil Zebra, Leopard and Snake Vellies and Sneakers-sold nationally through boutique and game lodges as well as online. Their CSI initiative, Waste-to-Wonder, uses an NPO to make earrings using Vellie offcuts, which are repurposed and sold.
New Earth’s mission is to encourage others to walk their truth. To stand tall in their uniqueness and to have the courage to be different.
