Hidden Spaces brought together jazz lovers from across Johannesburg for a night of music and connection. Hosted in Randburg, on 30 May, 2025, the event featured the Cape Town-based band Kujenga as the headline act. Known for curating intimate experiences, Hidden Spaces once again created a setting where music met emotion, and every performance felt personal.
From the moment I arrived, the space felt alive. The entrance was decorated with striking artistic portraits that lined the pathway to the stage, immediately setting a creative tone.
The band’s instruments shimmered under soft lighting, hinting at the performance to come. A romantic undercurrent ran through the night as many guests arrived in pairs, making it feel as if the event had also become a date night for jazz-loving couples.

Passion and precision
As the venue filled, a hum of anticipation took over. Some attendees clearly knew Kujenga’s work well, while others (like myself) were first-timers, unsure what to expect but curious. When the band finally stepped onto the stage, the wait proved worthwhile because they delivered with both passion and precision.
Kujenga performed some of their most beloved tracks, including Abaphantsi, Hymn for Hani, Lesedi, and Remembrance. Their tribute through Hymn for Hani resonated so deeply that the crowd demanded an encore of the song before the night was over.
The band’s energy was so infectious that the crowd could barely stay in their seats, some stood, while others swayed, hummed along, and cheered with enthusiasm.
“I’m here with my husband Ronald to relax and enjoy good music. This was our first time seeing Kujenga live, and it was out of this world,” Laurenne Stanley said, beaming with joy. “It’s definitely not the last time you’ll see us here.”

DJs at the desk
The event also included DJs who opened and closed the night — setting the tone with vibey sets that had guests dancing between performances.
“This is my first Hidden Spaces event and I had an amazing time,” Sibonelo Manzini, another attendee, said. “Not only was the band outstanding, the DJs were also on fire. I didn’t even know Kujenga was in Joburg until I saw the poster today. I’m so glad I came. I love Kujenga so much, and I’m already looking forward to The Muffinz!”
The night ended on a high note, with several lucky audience members winning tickets to the next Hidden Spaces event featuring The Muffinz who are an award-winning an Afro-soul band known for their rich harmonies. Judging by the energy in the room, most guests would return even without the incentive.
For those who missed out, the upcoming Phila Dlozi performance on 6 July, at The Fort in Illovo, promises another night of heartfelt music and community. If you’re a jazz fan, or even just curious about the genre, I highly recommend you experience it for yourself. Hidden Spaces continues to prove that live music, when done right, can be both intimate and unforgettable.
