Of the roughly 10,000 works held in the Johannesburg Art Gallery’s collection, most visitors see only a fraction. The rest sits in storage, out of view. A new exhibition opening at Keyes Art Mile this week asks a deceptively simple question: what if that were no longer true?
Beyond the Gallery: Reimagining the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) opens at 18:00 on Thursday, 30 July, 2026, at Keyes Art Mile’s Atrium in Rosebank, and runs through August. The show brings together a body of speculative architectural work by third-year students from the University of Johannesburg’s Department of Architecture, developed under a provocation set earlier this year by Senior Lecturer Alexander Opper: where every single object in the collection is on permanent display, all at once.
The results abandon the traditional museum blueprint entirely. Instead of a building organised around storage — with the public seeing only what curators choose to bring out — the students’ proposals flip the model, treating transparency and permanent visibility as the starting point rather than the exception.
But the exhibition isn’t only an architectural exercise. It’s a provocation about the city itself.
Many of the projects push back against the instinct to treat JAG’s future as a restoration problem — fix the building, and the institution is saved. Instead, they explore how the gallery might reconnect with Joubert Park and the surrounding city, arguing that JAG’s revival depends as much on its relationship to the surrounding ecosystem as on the building it occupies.
Visitors are invited to do more than look. The exhibition is designed as an open conversation —
a space to add personal readings and interpretations of what JAG could become, alongside the students’ own.
A programme of talks and activations will run throughout August, beginning with Keyes Art Night on Thursday, 6 August. The evening’s Makers’ Table — a collaboration between Open Window and Johannesburg In Your Pocket, brought together by TomorrowCo in the Keyes Art Mile — invites the public to create miniature artwork for an imagined future museum: The Joburg People’s Gallery.
Beyond the Gallery is a collaboration between the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Department of Architecture (DoA) and Keyes Art Mile, supported by Johannesburg In Your Pocket, the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), Corobrik, the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA), the Gauteng Institute for Architecture (GIfA), and IQOQO.
