Don’t Keep Mum

3 May 2023 · 0 comments

With a thousand balls in the air, being a mom is no joke – here’s some practical advice from Kerry Rydman for moms who might be feeling run down and burnt out – and need to prioritise their mental health.

Moms around the country recently got a day to (hopefully) put their feet up, enjoy breakfast in bed and be showered in gifts. But for the rest of the year, how can mothers make sure they’re filling their own cup before they fill others’? Kerry Rydman, a Neurofeedback specialist at Brain Harmonics, shares some practical advice for moms to look after their mental health.

Prioritise: As a mom, there are a million things to do, but it’s important to prioritise your tasks. Pick the most important issues that need your attention, delegate what you can and let go of what you don’t really need to take on. This allows you to focus your energy where it’s needed most. The most important thing you could do is to prioritise yourself – when you’re good then you can do more for the family. So, if you need time out in some way then make a plan to do it. Remember the oxygen mask on a plane? You have to put it on yourself before you save your kids.

Delegate tasks: Delegating tasks to other family members or hiring help can take some of the load off of you as a mom. Make a list of things that need to be done and see which ones can be delegated to others. The internet has great chore lists that show that our kids can help out a lot more than they do and remember to change their chores as they get older.

Do what make your soul happy: I’ve noticed that many women, especially moms, don’t actually know what they want – they’re so busy doing things for everyone else that they often don’t think of themselves. Try to meditate and see what will make you truly happy if money, time and energy didn’t matter. Look at every aspect of your life – what do you need for your home? What will stimulate you intellectually? What relationships do you need? What would you do for fun or for work? Once you have a few ideas, take one small step towards these goals whenever you can.

Be realistic: Don’t take on too much and set unrealistic expectations for yourself or others. Be realistic about what can be accomplished and set achievable goals as this will help to reduce stress and prevent burnout.

Talk about it: Most of the moms going through mental health issues don’t talk about it until they absolutely have to, so no one knows to offer help or check in. There are so many of us in the same boat so open up the conversation with people close to you to allow them to step in and help. When people know that you need help, they will step up – and while it might feel uncomfortable to receive help in the beginning, what a great thing to get used to!

Relax with Brain Harmonics: Brain Harmonics is a quick way to balance brainwaves to help to get rid of stress, anxiety and depression – and it can sort out sleep issues really fast. A good night’s sleep can really help moms to cope with it all again tomorrow!
