Everyone’s invited to join in on the fun for Garden Day on Sunday, 15 October 2023. This awesome shindig has been going strong for eight years now, and it’s all about kicking back and enjoying the fruits of your gardening labour with your pals and family. Whether you’ve got a sprawling garden or just a few potted plants on your porch, Garden Day is for you. Plus, it’s a chance to raise a glass to Mother Nature for all the goodness she provides year-round.
Some famous faces have been big supporters of Garden Day since it started in 2016. Folks like Suzelle DIY, Siba Mtongana, Mogau Seshoene (aka the Lazy Makoti), Donald Nxumalo, Jo Black, Karen Dudley, and Jo-Ann Strauss have all been on board, spreading the word about the joys of gardening and green spaces.

This year, there are some new people joining the Garden Day crew, like celebrity chef Zola Nene, Smile FM DJ Angel Campey, TV presenter Marciel Hopkins, botanist Rupert Koopman, chef Ayabonga Gope, tech whiz Fatima Mabulu, and event planners Hannes Maritz and Tina. They’re all excited to celebrate in their own unique ways.
So, what’s the deal with Garden Day? It’s all about taking a break and appreciating the gifts your garden gives you. How you party in your green space is totally up to you – from a picnic on the lawn to drinks in the veggie patch, a classic braai, or even a high tea. The only rule is to put down your tools and rock a flower crown – that’s the Garden Day symbol.
For Chef Zola Nene, the garden is her sanctuary where she slows down and finds balance. She loves taking her time planting and watering, just chilling with her thoughts. On Garden Day, she’ll be firing up the braai and hanging out with her nieces and nephews.

Hannes Maritz and Tina will be in their garden, too, picking fresh herbs and veggies for a family picnic. Gardening has brought their family closer, teaching their kids patience and respect for nature.
If you’re planning your own picnic on Garden Day, Marciel Hopkins has five top tips for a memorable party:
- Get your picnic spot ready: Mow the grass, water the plants, and set up some shade with a colourful umbrella. Decorate with bunting and string lights for a festive vibe.
- Stock up on blankets and pillows: You’ll need comfy blankets with a waterproof underside and lots of pillows. Bring extras in case someone gets chilly.
- Choose your picnic basket: Get creative with your picnic hamper. Try colourful plastic crates or cardboard boxes, and add a ribbon for a cute touch. Make sure everything’s securely closed.
- Plan the grub: Think beyond sandwiches. Try a watermelon salad bowl or pack biltong and droewors. Include deli goodies like cheeses and cherry tomatoes. Make your own cordial with homegrown fruit and don’t forget some sweet treats like cheesecakes and ice cream cones.
- Have a blast: Garden parties are all about fun with friends and family. Set up games if you’ve got the space – giant outdoor scrabble, sack races, or board games. But first, pop on that flower crown and toast to your green space.
